Work I've done

2007 - date
Senior Broadcast Journalist Producer, BBC Alba
I returned to the BBC in preparation for the launch of An Là, the half-hour evening news programme on the Gaelic-language television channel BBC Alba. I worked on the pre-launch development of the programme and was its first Output Producer, taking editorial responsibility for its content in the hours leading up to on-air and being the gallery producer during broadcast. I also contributed to BBC Radio nan Gàidheal's news programmes Aithris na Maidne and Aithris an Fheasgair. I was also trained as a Videojournalist, learning how to use Sony Z1 cameras and the Avid Newscutter video editing software package. An Là was shortlisted in the Best Current Affairs category at the Celtic Media Awards 2009.

2005 - 2007
Chief Executive and Publisher, Southside Media CIC
I left the BBC after becoming a Level 1 Award Winner with UnLtd, the support organisation for Social Entrepreneurs. I launched Southside Media a not-for-profit social enterprise - one of the first Community Interest Companies in Scotland. We published a monthly community newspaper called G41 and an online social network called g41.org.uk. After I became an UnLtd Level 2 Award Winner in 2006, Southside Media launched its second community newspaper and online social network, G42 and g42.org.uk. We think these were the first newspapers in Europe to be designed and laid-out using only Open Source Software, including The Gimp and Scribus. We built our websites using the Open Source content management system Drupal. As well as our two awards from UnLtd, we were very pleased when G42 was Runner-up in the Local Print category of the Refugee Week Scottish Media Awards 2008.

Freelance journalist and television producer
As well as my work with Southside Media, I did quite a bit of freelance work. I contributed news articles to the Sunday Herald. I was a production journalist on The Herald website. I was the Stringers Producer for the BBC's network coverage of the 2007 Elections. I produced two corporate DVDs for Glasgow City Council through Images of Light. I was a regular contributor to various programmes on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. And I did some production shifts on Good Morning Scotland.

2004 - 2005
Senior Broadcast Journalist Reporter, The Politics Show Scotland
I became the Scottish Reporter for The Politics Show, finding stories, writing and delivering scripts, interviewing contributors and appearing front-of-camera. On one day a week I worked as a Political Reporter covering the Scottish Parliament for various BBC Scotland television and radio outlets.

2002 - 2004
Broadcast Journalist, The Politics Show Scotland
I moved to BBC Scotland's Scottish Parliamentary Unit in the run-up to the launch of The Politics Show, the BBC's flagship weekly politics programme. My main duties were to produce and direct packages for the Scottish opt of the programme. During this time I developed my reputation for finding original stories and being able to present them in an interesting and engaging way. I also gained experience in producing live television on programmes like The Politics Show Scotland, Holyrood Live and Scottish Questions Live From Westminster. During Parliamentary recesses I worked for other BBC Scotland news outlets, including Good Morning Scotland, Newsdrive and Reporting Scotland.

2000 - 2002
Researcher/Director, Eòrpa, BBC Scotland
I started as a researcher with this award-winning European current affairs programme and moved on to become a researcher/director. I travelled to several European countries including Norway, Holland, Denmark, Turkey and Kosovo. A highlight of my time at Eòrpa was when I originated and researched a programme which proved for the first time that Depleted Uranium munitions used by Nato during the Balkan conflicts had contaminated local people. The programme was shortlisted in the Best Current Affairs category in the 2002 Celtic Film & Television Awards.

1999 - 2000
Media Resource Officer, Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations
I worked as a press officer for the representative body of Scotland's voluntary sector, regularly achieving coverage in press and broadcast media.

1998
Senior Reporter, Edinburgh Evening News
I covered local politics on Edinburgh City Council at this busy newspaper.

1997 - 1998
Senior Reporter, Huddersfield Examiner
I moved on to the local evening newspaper and got my Senior Reporter qualifications. I worked as a general news reporter, but developed my interest in covering local politics.

1995 - 1997
Junior Reporter, Express & Chronicle Series, West Yorkshire
My first full-time job in journalism was as one of a team of two reporters working across three weekly titles in a busy news patch in West Yorkshire. Editor Chris Burgess gave me a great grounding in journalism.

1995
Freelance Stringer, HA Weekly
After graduation I lived for a year in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. I contributed a feature about the work of the New Gorbals Housing Association to the newspaper of the National Federation of Housing Associations and eventually became the publication's Scottish stringer, contributing regular features and news stories.
